This might be denied, and is denied perhaps by some savages; but once admitted, and the fact of John's theft established, our conclusion must be admitted. As already stated, very frequently one of the premises is omitted. If, however, tho act of reasoning, that is, all three judgments, is fully expressed, we need not necessarily adhere to the order of expression heretofore given. For, to recur to our first example, we may say: Man is a free agent, because he is a morally responsible agent, and every morally responsible agent is a free agent. Man, being a moially responsible agent, and every morally responsible agi-nt being a free agent, is a free agent, etc. It will be seen from the above, that an act of reasoning, even if fully expressed, may be expressed in very different forms. "We come now to the question: in how many sentences must an act of reasoning bo expressed; and our answer is: every act of reasoning must be expressed in one, and only one sentence; just as every judgment must be expressed in one, and only one sentence. It may be necessary to establish one or both of the premises, and this may consume pages upon pages, and volumes upon volumes. But in expressing the conclusion, one or both of the premises must also be expressed; both must be expressed in a complete expression of the act of reasoning. To give a concluding example, we select a sentence we just have made use of. "We stated above " that if the act of reasoning, that is, all three judgments, is fully expressed, we need not adhere to the order of expression heretofore given."
